About Healthy Living Family Medical Functional Medicine
Functional medicine is a systems biology-based approach to medicine. It focuses on finding and treating the root cause of a disease. Healthy Living Family Medical provides functional medicine to all patients so that we can focus on improving your health for good, and not just temporarily treating symptoms. As a family clinic, our patients range from children to seniors. Our practitioners help all of our patients to take care of every aspect of their health and understand how each element of their health can affect the others.
At each initial visit, we conduct a full health assessment, including a Bio Meridian scan, consultation, and blood work. We take the time to get a full understanding of your health and how we can help. Our practitioners are members of the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM).
Additional Information About Functional Medicine
The model of functional medicine was developed using insights of key thought leaders who emphasized the importance of treating people as individuals. They focused on using research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics to advance medicine and applying them clinically to find and address the root causes of disease. The idea is to use low-risk interventions to reverse the causes of disease by modifying molecular and cellular systems. As interest in functional medicine grew, it was systemized so that it could be taught to and practiced by other practitioners.
At Healthy Living Family Medical, this means that we use practices such as taking a thorough health history, carrying out a Bio Meridian scan, a detailed one-on-one consultation with one of our practitioners, and extensive lab work. This follows the IFM approach to functional medicine, which uses a set of tools designed to formalize history-taking and mapping symptoms. Three key tools are the Functional Medicine Matrix, Timeline, and the GOTOIT framework.
The Functional Medicine Matrix is used to help the medical practitioner to organize and prioritize the patient’s health issues. They do this using the patient’s personal, family, social, and medical history. Using the Functional Medicine Matrix, the clinician can create a complete picture of the patient and their health.
The Functional Medicine Timeline gives patients the opportunity to discuss any life events that motivate them to make changes to their health and take part in treatment. It helps practitioners to identify anything that might predispose or contribute to the patient’s changes or responses. A complete timeline of the patient’s health and life ensures everything is taken into account when assessing the patient’s current health.
The GOTOIT framework is used by practitioners to discover the root causes of disease and apply the right treatment. GOTOIT stands for “gather, organize, tell, order, initiate, and track.” Practitioners use this framework to learn how to apply the Functional Medicine Matrix and Timeline.
When you choose a medical provider like Healthy Living Family Medical that works on a functional medicine model, you benefit from spending a lot more time with your practitioner than you would with a conventional provider. They will spend time talking to you and discussing your history, both medical and personal. Each patient is treated as an individual, and their unique concerns, complaints, and wishes are taken into account when finding the root cause of the medical problems that you are suffering.
This thorough approach to providing medical care means that many patients are able to find the cause of problems that other practitioners have been unable to help with. Although people often look for a functional medicine clinic for a specific problem, they often end up choosing the clinic as their primary health provider. Patients work together with their provider in a true partnership, where the patient has as much input as their practitioner has and benefits from being treated as an individual.
