Genetic Testing

When the Human Genome project, a 15 year global collaborative effort to map and sequence the Human Genome, was completed in 2003 it opened the door for new understanding and identification of specific genes with ties to specific diseases. Today, you can purchase an in home genetic test from companies such as 23 and Me and Ancestry to receive personal genetic information. Although these tests have all the genetic information,  they do not provide all the medical genetic detail for you.

Here at Healthy Living Family Medical, we have tools and providers that can interpret that genetic information.

FAQ

A gene test will identify a gene that can contribute to a health issue. It will not mean that you will get that health issue but that you are genetically predisposed for it.   Alzheimer’s, Heart Attack, Stroke, Inflammation, Response to Stress, Vitamin B and Folate Conversion are just a few of the genes identified that are tied to health.

It is true you can not change a gene or cure a genetic defect, but you can make modifications and changes to supplement or side step the genetic deficiencies. For example, a mutation in the MTHFR gene for individuals makes it harder for the body to methylate or absorb Vitamin B12 and folic acid. Knowing this deficiency, all you need to do is take methylated vitamin B12 and L-methylfolate.  This is a very simple modification through supplementation.
